Furniture Delivery Measurements: Check the Whole Route

Measure doors, turns, stairs and packages before ordering furniture. Use a route record that separates room placement from delivery access and asks the right provider questions.

Furniture needs to fit in two places: the room where you will use it and the route it will travel to get there. A scaled room sketch answers part of the placement question. It cannot certify that a package or assembled piece can turn through a hall or enter an elevator.

Identify what will actually arrive

Save the exact product, configuration and size. Find out whether it arrives assembled, in separate sections or in flat packages. Ask which parts are removable by the delivery team under the seller’s service, rather than assuming legs, doors or packaging will be removed.

IKEA explains that its Measurements section separates assembled dimensions from Packaging information and the number of boxes. Record every package relevant to your item. The size of the finished object alone may not describe the item that the team must handle.

Walk the route from arrival to final position

Use this original route record. Leave unknown dimensions as unknown and give the record to the actual delivery provider for review.

Keep straight openings separate from turns

A package narrower than a doorway has passed only one comparison. Its length, height and orientation still matter, and the next turn can be a different constraint. Do not use one width subtraction to approve an entire delivery.

The Sofa Store’s guidance calls attention to hallway turns, stair landings and low overhead points. Record the actual conditions instead of substituting a generic “standard doorway” measurement. A photograph can help the provider understand an obstruction, but it does not replace a missing number.

Worked example: a room fit with unresolved access

Consider an illustrative sofa planned against a 240cm wall. The chosen assembled width is 210cm, so it appears to fit that wall with 30cm remaining before considering other room uses. That arithmetic says nothing yet about the hall turn.

The order record shows one long package, but its packaged depth is missing. The correct status is “delivery access unresolved,” even if the sofa drawing looks right. Ask for the missing package information and send the route record to the delivery provider. Do not mark the item approved by rotating an approximate rectangle on screen.

Clarify the service and building conditions

Ask where the delivery ends, who assembles the item if needed, how packaging is handled and what happens when access fails. Check the written service and return conditions before ordering. A room-of-choice service, an outside drop-off and a collection order involve different work for you.

If your building uses elevator bookings, delivery hours or access permissions, confirm them with the relevant building contact. Do not plan to remove a building fitting or perform an unsafe maneuver to make a purchase work. Choose an alternative configuration or obtain proper help when the route remains uncertain.

Save a complete pre-order record

Keep the product reference, measurement date, package list, route sketch, unresolved questions and the provider’s response together. Recheck if the selected size, sectional configuration or delivery arrangement changes. An answer about another version should not silently carry over.

Then return to the room plan and check ordinary use: opening storage, moving a chair and using the nearby route. Passing delivery access does not establish that the piece works well in the room. The two records complement one another and give you a clearer reason to buy, change the choice or wait.
