How to Measure a Room for a Simple Furniture Plan

Measure the room, then its interruptions

Record wall-to-wall width and depth in one unit. If the room is not rectangular, draw the irregular parts separately rather than treating the bounding rectangle as usable space. Note alcoves, columns and changes in depth on paper.

Mark doors, windows, radiators, built-in storage and outlets. Record where an opening begins along the wall, not only its width. Height matters for shelves, window sills and tall pieces even though the simple plan is a top-down drawing.

Measure furniture in use

Record width, depth and height from the actual object or exact product specification. Include projecting arms, handles and bases. Then consider the space the piece needs when you use it: an opened drawer, pulled-out chair or reclined seat changes the arrangement.

IKEA lists length, width, height and cord length for the RANARP floor lamp. Those separate measurements show why one small base shape cannot tell the full story. Use the listed dimensions as a starting point, then check the actual variant and instructions.

Enter the drawing and label its limits

Replace the planner’s example room dimensions before treating the picture as your room. Rename the example furniture and enter its measurements, or remove it and add your own pieces. Units can change between centimeters and inches without changing the underlying drawing.

Add a clear-zone rectangle for a route or space you personally want to preserve. The tool can identify overlapping rectangles and pieces outside the boundary. It does not calculate required clearances, door arcs, stability or whether a route meets an access standard.

Check the physical route before buying

Use the drawing to decide which arrangement is worth trying, then test that arrangement in the real room. Check the route between entries and daily activities, including doors and storage in use. Do not move heavy pieces without a suitable method and help when needed.

Finally, check the delivery route separately: building entry, stairs, lifts, corridors and the packaged item. A piece can fit the room and still be difficult to deliver. Export the layout JSON for later edits and a PNG for a quick reference, keeping the planning-sketch label visible.

Worked example: turn the comparison into a next step

A cabinet can fit along a measured wall while its open doors interfere with a chair. Separately, the assembled cabinet may be smaller than one of its packages. These are two different reasons to pause an order, and neither appears in a single width measurement.
